Solomon's Seal

Polygonatum biflorum

Solomon's seal sends up gracefully arching 2–4 ft stalks of paired oval leaves with small white bell flowers dangling beneath them in spring, ripening into blue-black berries. Spreads slowly by jointed rhizomes (the 'seal' marks of fallen stems give it its name) to form polite woodland colonies.

Field Notes

[ growing · ecology · siting · care ]

Solomon's seal sends up gracefully arching 2–4 ft stalks of paired oval leaves with small white bell flowers dangling beneath them in spring, ripening into blue-black berries. Spreads slowly by jointed rhizomes (the 'seal' marks of fallen stems give it its name) to form polite woodland colonies.

Why it's on this list: arching woodland stalks · pendant white bells. Part of Rooted Revival's NE Oklahoma plant catalog — natives, ecologically positive non-invasive cultivars, and food crops worth growing in the Tulsa region.

Companion Planting

[ guild · polyculture · cross-layer pairings ]

In a shaded woodland understory, solomon's seal pairs naturally with: american hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana), american beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), crossvine (Bignonia capreolata), inland sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium), american alumroot (Heuchera americana), and black cherry (Prunus serotina).

Combine solomon's seal with the warm-season grasses listed above for a self-sustaining matrix.
